Meet the team
Canon Frank Scammell
Born and brought up in Surrey, Frank married Pippa in 1981. They have three married children, and are now enjoying being grandparents. Frank became a Christian at Cambridge before training at St John’s, Nottingham. Ordained in 1982, Frank has served in churches in Burton on Trent, Swanage and Bury St Edmunds and now in Guildford since 2003. Frank and Pippa enjoy walking, gardening and most sports. Pippa is heavily involved in Emmanuel’s Fair Trade Shop.
Children’s and Families Worker
Melissa grew up in Margate Kent. She became a Christian at 15 through Scripture Union’s Beach Mission at Minnis Bay. She loved the mission so much that she became a junior leader at 17 and has been involved in children’s work (and a little youth work) ever since. She has studied at UCA Canterbury and completed a degree in Primary Education at Winchester University. She cares deeply about equipping families to grow together. She loves the energy and creativity of children and the fun that they bring. She has been serving at Emmanuel since 2013.
Rev Chris Reddin
Chris grew up in Essex and became a Christian as a teenager. She studied Sociology at Essex University married Terry in 1968 and was a teacher, first in London and then in Surrey. Chris and Terry moved from Fulham to Guildford in 1974 and attended Emmanuel until 2000, helping with the youth work, being on the PCC and involved in many areas of church life. Between 2000 and 2010 they worshiped at Burpham Church while Chris, now retired from teaching, trained for the Church of England Ministry. She was ordained in 2004 and served as a curate at Burpham until 2011. Now back at Emmanuel, Chris serves as an active retired minister. Chris and Terry have two daughters, Tonya and Natasha, and four grandchildren.
Aretia has been attending Emmanuel for about 35 years and joined the staff in 2001.
She’s brought up her children in the church and is now delighted to see her grandchildren attending.
She loves the variety the job offers and the opportunity to meet so many different people each week, and particularly enjoys seeing God at work in people’s lives and in our community.
Rev Sophie Chatten
Sophie was born and brought up in the Guildford area so has felt at home being back here for her curacy. She was ordained a Deacon in July 2015 and a Priest in July 2016 and has been excited to be doing her curacy here at Emmanuel. She and her husband Simon and their sons Benjamin and Oliver are now looking forward to where God may lead them next.
Sarah moved to Guildford Sept 2016 after previously working at churches in North London and Reading. She loves working with young people and seeing them grow into their fullest potential. She loves the variety of the youth work at Emmanuel and is excited about seeing young people respond to God for the first time.
Rev Rupert Masters
Rupert was born and brought up in Surrey and has lived in the Guildford area for over thirty years. He cannot pinpoint an exact time when he became a Christian but it was at Hull University that Christ became particularly real to him. He has been worshipping at Emmanuel Church for about 35 years. Over that time he has been a teacher in the children’s and young people’s groups, a home group leader and a church warden, as well as serving many years on the PCC.
Assistant Youth Worker
Alex moved to Guildford in 2018 to start a role as assistant youth worker at Emmanuel. He had previously completed a internship in youth ministry. Alex grew up in North London before moving to Canterbury for university. Alex first got to know God as a child and has since grown in his faith through involvement in various youth camps and youth groups.
Alex likes playing video games, watching football and American football, playing and watching basketball and eating sushi.
